Artist's Comments

Saw the original painting at the National Art Gallery of Scotland in Edinburgh (from which I sketched there and then) - Rembrandt's Self Portrait, aged 51. He had gone bankrupt at that point, and he painted himself at one of the lowest points in his life - a very sober, grimly realistic and broodingly dark portrait of himself. It is a very emotional portrait, even if he is, at first glance, simply staring at the viewer. You can't help but feel sympathy and pity as Rembrandt stares. I love this portrait - it has such raw emotions in it.
